Fronteira, Portugal
The Roquette and Borges families have deep roots in the farming industry in the Alto Alentejo region of Portugal. Dating back to the late 19th century, the Boavista Vineyard, managed by the original vintners, produced a robust wine branded as “Visconde de Alter.” Building on this historical legacy, the Borges family decided to revive the tradition of winemaking by replanting the vineyards and reestablishing the production of high-quality wines. This renewed effort led to the establishment of Terras de Alter in 2004, a collaboration between Sociedade Agrícola das Antas, Sociedade Agrícola do Monte Barrão, and renowned Australian oenologist Peter Bright. This joint venture combines centuries of agricultural heritage with modern winemaking expertise.
Peter Bright, a distinguished winemaker known for his global experience and technical skill, plays a pivotal role at Terras de Alter as the head winemaker and business partner. After earning his oenology credentials in Australia, Bright moved to Portugal in 1981 and gained a reputation as one of the first 'flying winemakers' before settling in Portugal to focus on its diverse vineyards. By 1993, he had established himself as an authority on Portuguese wine, and he chose to develop Terras de Alter in Fronteira, Portugal, aiming to produce exceptional, value-driven wines from local grape varieties. With an annual production of 75,000 cases, Terras de Alter continues to blend tradition with innovation under Bright’s expert guidance.
